Based on our visit on October 15, 2026.
Visiting downtown Gangneung in October? The Gangneung Noodle Festival is a small local food festival where you can try different noodle dishes, watch live performances, and enjoy eating outdoors.
But is it worth making a special trip?
We visited on opening day to check the food prices, portion sizes, waiting times, and overall atmosphere.
Our verdict: The festival is worth a quick stop if you’re already exploring downtown Gangneung, but we wouldn’t recommend traveling to Gangneung just for this event. The experience is more about enjoying a local street festival than finding exceptional noodles.

The festival takes place in the heart of Gangneung, with food stalls, outdoor seating, performances, and activities.
The venue is relatively compact. During our visit, it took about 10 minutes to walk around without stopping for food.
If you plan to eat, allow additional time for ordering, waiting, and dining.
🍜 What Is the Gangneung Noodle Festival?
Gangneung is known for several local noodle dishes, including jang kalguksu (spicy knife-cut noodles), makguksu (buckwheat noodles), and gamja ongsimi kalguksu (noodles with potato dumplings).
The Gangneung Noodle Festival celebrates the city’s noodle culture by bringing different noodle dishes together in one place.
The 2026 event marks its fifth edition, with the festival’s Korean name changing from Gangneung Noodle Festival to Gangneung Guksu Festival.
Alongside Korean noodles, visitors can also find international dishes such as Vietnamese pho and Japanese yakisoba.
The festival also features performances and scheduled activities.

🍽️ What Can You Eat, and How Much Does It Cost?
Food prices
During our visit, most of the dishes we checked were priced between ₩7,000 and ₩9,000.
That’s not particularly different from the price of a simple meal at a local restaurant.
However, the portions were noticeably smaller.
Portion sizes
The dishes we tried felt roughly 70% of a typical restaurant serving.
Portion sizes will vary, but one bowl may not be enough if you’re particularly hungry.
If you’re planning to have a full meal, consider trying more than one dish or eating elsewhere afterward.
What we tried
We tried Vietnamese pho and Japanese yakisoba.

Both were convenient dishes to enjoy at an outdoor festival.
However, we found the food quality somewhat disappointing compared with what we would expect from dedicated noodle restaurants.
The range of dishes also felt more limited than we had anticipated.
If you’re visiting primarily for excellent noodles, you may be better off exploring Gangneung’s established local restaurants.
That said, the food isn’t the whole experience.
Watching vendors prepare noodles and eating at outdoor tables surrounded by other visitors gives the festival a different kind of appeal.
Think of it more as a casual local festival experience than a serious food destination.

⏳ How to Order and How Long You’ll Wait
Ordering and payment
At the stalls we used, food was ordered through self-service kiosks, and card payment was available.
We couldn’t confirm whether the kiosks supported English.
If you’re unfamiliar with Korean, having a translation app ready may make ordering easier.
Waiting times
Waiting times varied considerably between stalls.
Some lines moved relatively quickly, while others required waits of more than 20 minutes.
If there’s a particular dish you want to try, allow extra time.
Avoid the lunch rush
The festival is held in central Gangneung, where many local office workers are based.
As a result, the area can become particularly busy around lunchtime, especially between 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM.
For a more relaxed experience, consider visiting outside the lunch rush.
Crowd levels may vary depending on the day, weather, and scheduled activities.
🎶 Live Performances and Outdoor Dining
For us, the outdoor atmosphere was one of the most enjoyable parts of the festival.
Visitors can buy food from stalls and eat at tables set up along the street.
There’s also a performance area where visitors can enjoy entertainment while spending time at the festival.

It’s not the same as sitting down for a comfortable restaurant meal, but eating outdoors in the middle of a local festival has its own charm.
If you’re interested in experiencing everyday Korean community events rather than just visiting major tourist attractions, this can be an enjoyable stop.
Performance schedules and activities may vary, so check the event information if there’s something specific you’d like to see.
📍 Where Is the Festival and How Do You Get There?
The Gangneung Noodle Festival takes place around Wolhwa Street in downtown Gangneung.
The area is close to Gangneung Jungang Market, making it convenient to combine both places in one visit.

From Gangneung Station
If you’re arriving by KTX, taking a taxi from Gangneung Station is one of the easiest options.
Wolhwa Street is close enough that a taxi ride may cost around the standard starting fare, depending on traffic and your exact drop-off point.
Local buses are another option. Check NAVER Map for current routes and stops.
For more information about getting around the city, see our Getting Around Gangneung guide.
Combine it with Jungang Market
If you’re planning to explore Gangneung Jungang Market or Wolhwa Street, the festival fits naturally into your itinerary.
Rather than planning an entire trip around the event, consider stopping by for a bowl of noodles while sightseeing downtown.
💡 Practical Tips for International Visitors

The dishes we tried were smaller than typical restaurant meals. - Card payment is available at some stalls.
We used self-service kiosks that accepted cards, but we didn’t check every vendor. - Keep a translation app ready.
We couldn’t verify whether the ordering kiosks offered an English interface. - Allow extra time for popular stalls.
Some queues may take more than 20 minutes. - Combine the festival with downtown sightseeing.
Jungang Market and Wolhwa Street make good additions to the same outing.
✅ Is the Gangneung Noodle Festival Worth Visiting?
Yes, if you’re already in downtown Gangneung. Probably not if you’re considering a special trip just for the festival.
Based on our visit, here’s what stood out.
What we liked
- The casual outdoor dining atmosphere
- Watching vendors prepare noodle dishes
- Live performances and a lively local setting
- The chance to try different types of noodles in one place
- The convenient downtown location
What could be better
- Food quality was less impressive than at dedicated restaurants
- Portions felt small for the price
- Fewer food choices than we expected
- Long queues at some stalls
- A relatively small festival area
For us, the atmosphere was more memorable than the food.
If your main goal is to enjoy excellent Korean noodles, visiting a well-established local noodle restaurant may be a better choice.
But if you’re curious about local Korean festivals and happen to be nearby, the Gangneung Noodle Festival is worth a short visit.
Our recommendation: Treat it as a fun addition to your downtown Gangneung itinerary, rather than the main reason for your trip.
